The Celebration

Over 200 guests helped the Alley Theatre celebrate the opening of Holmes and Watson, a play by Jeffrey Hatcher that solves the mystery of Sherlock Holmes’ apparent death. The performance is the Alley’s final Hubbard Theatre show for the 2017-2018 season.

The Story

Preceding the play, guests were treated to a British-themed dinner catered by City Kitchen, which featured a dual entrée of poached salmon and roast beef roulade; a tomato, samphire, and watercress salad; and Jersey Royal potatoes. The crowning glory of the delicious meal was a scrumptious English Summer Pudding made with succulent fresh berries. After dinner, attendees enjoyed the clever play, which is full of suspenseful twists and turns.

The Moments

During dinner, Alley Theatre managing director, Dean Gladden, greeted guests thanking them for their continued support of the theater. Board president, Butch Mach, spoke of the Alley’s many accomplishments this season after everything it endured following Hurricane Harvey. Mark Shanahan, the play’s director, drew a parallel between the play’s theme of friendship and the coming together of the people of Houston after a tragedy. In the Mitchell Neuhaus Lobby after the play, glasses of champagne were raised in a toast to its success. Guests also sang happy birthday to long-time donor Larry Campagna and mingled with the cast.

Guests: Dean Gladden, Mark Shanahan, James Black, Margaret Alkek Williams, Trini Mendenhall, Mady Kades, Liz Frankel, Larry and Patty Campagna, Beth Madison, and Allyn and Jill Risley.
