Ars Lyrica Houston has dedicated its 2017-2018 season to women. Artful Women, the season’s theme, celebrates the enduring impact of women on the arts as muse, heroine, musician, and patron. The opening concert, Sweet Philomela, which was performed on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Zilkha Hall, Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, was a transcendent success, mesmerizing the audience with the soaring voice of soprano Sherezade Panthaki and the unique sounds of the glass harmonica.

As a continuing display of gratitude to its loyal subscribers, Ars Lyrica’s exclusive post-concert reception was a delight. Guests were treated to drinks and savory bites provided by Kathryn and Helen Godfrey. The highlight of the event was a Q&A and impromptu demonstration by Dennis James on the intriguing glass harmonica.

Artful Women honoree, Jano Nixon Kelley, whose continued philanthropic efforts for the arts are monumental in the community, addressed the gathering. Her inspiring words encouraged a call to action to support and rebuild. Quoting Martin Luther King, she concluded with, “Everybody can be great . . . because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.”
