Kids’ Meals is a caring nonprofit whose mission is “to end childhood hunger by delivering free healthy meals to the doorsteps of Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children, and, through collaboration, provide their families with resources to help end the cycle of poverty.” Every day of the year, Kids’ Meals’ volunteers prepare thousands of healthy lunches and deliver them to children enrolled in their program. Kids’ Meals currently serves six Houston-area routes where the need is critical.

It is an unfortunate fact that preschool-aged children often fall through the gap of social services addressing food security, because they can’t access the free-meal programs offered at schools. Kids’ Meals is a first-responder to children ages five years old and under facing debilitating hunger due to extreme poverty. Approximately 2,900 healthy meals are provided daily to these children by Kids’ Meals. The organization doesn’t stop there, however. When school is out, it also delivers healthy meals to every child in these homes up to age 18. On any given week day, up to 4,800 children benefit from Kids’ Meals.

Food insecurity is a terrible problem for many of Houston’s children and its effects can be devastating. Without balanced meals their physical and mental health will suffer, they may develop behavioral issues, and their ability to learn will decrease. The home meal delivery program concept to benefit those without access to proper meals began in the early 1980s. In its current form, Kids’ Meals was created in 2006. Due to the tremendous support the organization receives from its board of directors, advisory board, and community partners it has made great strides toward reaching its goal of ending childhood hunger in Houston.

In order to continue doing this, Kids’ Meals needs a band of enthusiastic volunteers to help its dedicated staff. Many are on board already, but the organization can always use more. If you are looking for a fulfilling experience as a volunteer, there is no better organization to join than Kids’ Meals, and there is no shortage of opportunity.
