13 celsius, Houston-based wine bar and retail shop, was named among the best wine bars in the U.S. by Time Inc.’s Food & Wine magazine. The list features 19 wine bars from across the nation based on well-chosen wine lists that provide a distinct point of view as well as for the atmosphere and experience the wine bar provides. Food & Wine magazine is a coveted go-to resource for news in food, drink, travel, design and entertaining.

13 opened its doors 10 years ago with a passion for architectural preservation and fine wine becoming the first wine bar in Houston to store and serve its wines at the optimal temperature --13°C. Inspired by the then dilapidated Jenning's Cleaners and Dyeing Shoppe, 13 began as an effort to save the original structure and create a destination that is a source of pride for the neighborhood resulting in the Good Brick Award in 2008 by the Greater Houston Preservation Alliance.

“It’s pretty unbelievable that by just following our heart and our passion, we were recognized at this level. All we tried to achieve was to be was to be the best on the block, said general partner and co-founder, Ian Rosenberg. “We are incredibly honored and humbled. To our customers, thank you all for the wonderful words and support. 13 is nothing without its patrons and supporters and we would be nowhere without you.”

Food & Wine recognized 13 for its 1920s-era, Mediterranean-style structure in Midtown Houston, Coravin preservation system, wide-ranging wine list and the accompanying cheese and charcuterie list. The only Houston wine bar on the list, 13 credits their success to its collaborative environment, customer service, community involvement.

13’s highly educated staff delights in making wine fun and more accessible by helping guests navigate their massive list of over 300 wines from around the globe -- providing Houstonians with a unique experience. To further educate and enlighten their customers, 13 regularly hosts wine tastings, winemaker meet & greets, private wine classes, and an annual customer appreciation wholesale event -- a community-focused free wine tasting and holiday market where customers stock up on wine, artisan cheese, locally roasted coffee and gourmet goodies. Together, co-founder Michael Sammons and general manager Adele Corrigan, Certified Specialist of Wine through the Society of Wine Educators and Level I status with the Court of Master Sommeliers, have raised the bar for wine enthusiasts in the city and has contributed to Houston’s reputation as the culinary and cultural capital of the South.

“I was surprised and super excited to find out we made the best wine bar list,” said Corrigan. “I am truly thankful for a great staff and a loyal customer base who have supported us for years. I hope to continue to provide Houstonians with great wines, memorable experiences and pushing the standard of food and beverage in this city to the next level. ”

Locally, 13 has long been a Houston favorite among notable chefs, restaurateurs and wine connoisseurs including Master Sommelier David Keck (formerly of Camerata), Chef William Wright of James Beard semifinalist Helen Greek Food and Wine, and Chef Monica Pope, the only Texas woman to be named Top 10 Best New Chefs by Food & Wine magazine (1996).

13 believes in giving back to the community and supports the arts and a variety of local non-profit organizations including the Museum of Fine Arts Houston, Buffalo Bayou Partnership, The Menil Collection, and Legacy Community Health among many others.
