A Small Cookie

Poppy’s world was black and white. The houses were gray, the trees dry, and the town dark and scary. No one smiled, felt joy, or had fun—not even Poppy.

“Poppy, take the path into the forest to gather mushrooms for dinner. When your basket is full, come straight back,” her mother instructed. Poppy put on her boots, grabbed her basket, and headed out.

The path was dark and narrow, twisting through the forest with countless ways to get lost. Sounds echoed as Poppy walked, slowly filling her basket with mushrooms. The sunset and the forest grew darker.

Poppy reached a large tree surrounded by mushrooms of all sizes. The tree, tall and ancient, seemed to whisper secrets to the sky, its gnarled trunk as wide as a house. She crouched to pick mushrooms, carefully placing them in her basket. As the basket filled, a faint voice broke the silence.

“Hello? Is anyone there? Please help me.”

Poppy froze, her heart pounding. No one in her town ever called for help—or offered it. She hesitated, gripping her basket, but the voice came again. “Please help . . . I’m lost.” Curiosity overcame her fear. Following the sound, she found a little girl sitting under an ancient oak, trembling. What struck Poppy wasn’t the girl’s tear-streaked face, but her fiery red hair, shimmering vividly against the gray forest.

“Can you help me?” the girl sniffled. “I can’t find my way home.”
“What’s your name?” Poppy asked.

“R-r-ruby,” she whispered. “I live in a pink house at the edge of town.”

“A pink house?” Poppy frowned. “I’ve never seen a pink house in town.”

Ruby stood, clutching Poppy’s hand. “It’s there. I’ll show you.” The journey back felt shorter with Ruby. At the edge of town, Poppy stopped, breathless. Beyond the gray houses stood a tall pink home glowing in the dark town. The garden overflowed with vibrant flowers and autumn leaves. A sweet aroma filled the air.

“What’s that smell?” Poppy asked.

Ruby grinned. “My mom’s cookies! We bake them for the holidays and share them.”

The door opened, spilling warm light. Ruby’s mother, kind-eyed and flour-dusted, smiled. “Ruby, you found a friend!”

“This is Poppy, and she helped to guide me home.” Ruby introduced Poppy to her mom.

“Would you like to help Ruby pass the cookies out?” Ruby’s mother asked.

“Sure,” Poppy said shyly.

They passed cookies out to homes, shops, and people passing by. Poppy started enjoying giving out the cookies, such a small gesture lightened the hearts of those receiving them. Something flickered inside Poppy—a warmth she’d never felt. She smiled, small and hesitant, as the grayness began to lift.

Back at the pink house, the colorful town shimmered behind them. Poppy asked, “Why was your house always in color?”

Ruby’s mother smiled. “There’s magic in kindness. The town once glowed with life, but when people stopped sharing joy, the colors faded away.”

Ruby added, “But, we never stopped believing in kindness. That’s why our house stayed bright.”

Poppy stared at a golden-swirled cookie on the table. “So . . . the cookies?”

“They’re just the start,” Ruby’s mother said. “The real magic is in sharing love—like you did today.”

“So anyone can bring the colors back?” Poppy asked.
“Anyone willing to share kindness,” Ruby’s mother replied.

Ruby nudged Poppy, laughing. “You’re a natural.”

“Natural, me!” Poppy thought to herself. Her heart seems to have had its happy dance to expose the other colors beyond the dark and gray colors.
