Nancy Strohmer is a community leader, consummate volunteer, and former businesswoman who lives life with commitment, passion, and joy.
From her early days as a candy striper to her current role as president of the Charity Foundation of the American Contract Bridge League (ACBL), Nancy has led a life guided by a deep commitment to making a positive impact. Her journey, shaped by compassion and dedication, revolves around family, her faith, cherished friendships, and a steadfast devotion to philanthropy.
Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Nancy experienced a childhood full of adventure that spanned across the United States and England, courtesy of her father's distinguished service in the Air Force. She pursued her education at James Madison University in Virginia, where she earned both B.S. and M.S. degrees in education (business). In 1981, Nancy found her home in Houston, embarking on a successful entrepreneurial journey as the owner of a manufacturing company specializing in ocean container liners—a venture she later sold in 2001.
At the core of Nancy's heart lies her family, and her life is a testament to it. Together, she and her beloved husband, Hans, hold dear the time they spend with their four children and ten cherished grandchildren. Their treasured family traditions, such as the annual Santa Sleepover, have spanned the globe, creating cherished memories for the past 26 years.
Throughout her journey, Nancy has been a loyal supporter and board member of numerous Houston organizations. She has dedicated her time and energy to institutions such as Houston Symphony League, Houston Symphony Society, The Living Bank, American Diabetes Association, CEO Roundtable – Greater Houston Partnership, Baylor Partnership, World Affairs Council, Muscular Sclerosis Society, The Salvation Army Auxiliary, Bach Society, Cypress-Woodlands Junior Forum Business Board Houston, Friends of Hermann Park, Melancthon Institute, National Charity League, TIRR Memorial Hermann, University of St. Thomas Performing and Fine Arts Society, and the Moores Society of the University of Houston's Moores School of Music where she chaired its Annual Luncheon twice. In addition, Nancy cochaired The Living Bank’s gala and the American Diabetes Association’s gala. Her commitment is further underscored by her lifetime memberships in Houston Symphony League, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, March of Dimes Guild, Cancer Fighters, American Heart Association Guild, and Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
Nancy has served as president of various organizations, including the ACBL’s District and Unit boards and the ACBL Charity Foundation. At the ACBL’s Unit level, she created a widely read monthly newsletter that reached thousands of members. Nancy has chaired several tournaments and special events and currently serves as the ACBL’s Goodwill Committee chair and the District and Unit’s charity chair. In addition to serving as president and vice president of Houston Symphony League (North and Central Leagues), Nancy chaired events such as the Opening Night Gala and the Post Supplement fundraising project. Additionally, in earlier years, she served as president of Champion Forest (CF) Civic Club, CF Women’s Club, and CF Homeowner’s Association.
Nancy's contributions have garnered numerous awards and recognitions. She has been honored with The Social Book's prestigious Houston Treasures award, inducted into the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame, celebrated as the Greater Houston Women's Chamber of Commerce Advocate of the Year, and received the University of Houston's Spirit of Volunteerism honor and the Crohn's and Colitis Woman of Distinction title. In addition, Nancy was honored by the ACBL with a lifetime membership in the Aileen Osofsky Goodwill Committee, the ACBL District 16 Jacoby Award (the Premier Service award), the ACBL District Star Award (service award at the local level), the ACBL Goodwill Award, University of Houston's Leading Ladies of Houston acknowledgment, and Houston Symphony League North Area fund-raising event honor. Her contributions have also earned her a well-deserved place in the publication, Notable Women of Texas.
Nancy's interests encompass a diverse range of passions, including competitive bridge, where she holds the title of Sapphire Life Master with nearly 4000 masterpoints. She's embraced the thrill of hiking, conquering impressive peaks like Mount Kilimanjaro. Her wanderlust has carried her to every corner of the globe, covering all seven continents. Amid these pursuits, Nancy strives to be a dedicated volunteer who consistently seeks to make a lasting impact on those organizations she serves.
It is for all the reasons mentioned above, and many more, that Nancy Strohmer has been named a Top 20 Inspiring Woman Impact Maker for 2024.
