The Art of Storytelling:
When Every Room Becomes a Canvas

There are creators who decorate, and then there are creators who compose. Saula Centa Valente is a creator who composes. For this artist of the home, a table, a sofa, a room—any surface, any corner—becomes a white canvas ready to be transformed into an experience. Her philosophy is simple yet profound: beauty must always meet practicality, and every item placed in a space must carry meaning. Nothing is accidental; every detail is studied, layered, and intentionally curated. Because in her world, every piece of décor has a story.

A table, for instance, is never just a table. It is the work counter on which a true piece of art takes form. Saula begins with an old vintage cloth—usually off-white—to create a soft, neutral foundation. A wooden placemat follows, grounding the setting in a sense of nature and the outdoors. Then, a playful twist: a paper placemat meant to invite interaction. Guests often scribble little comments or drawings, adding a personal imprint to the experience.

Layer by layer, the story unfolds. A pewter charger brings weight and history. A scalloped white porcelain plate adds elegance. A linen doily rests quietly beneath a lion-headed bowl, while a crisp linen napkin wrapped in a forest-green velvet ribbon completes the ensemble. Golden silverware offers a touch of refined glow, and a set of carefully selected glasses finishes the composition. At each seat, a place card held by a real pinecone reminds guests of the season and of nature’s presence at the table.

Saula’s centerpieces are natural landscapes—living sceneries that invite conversation. From fresh greens clipped directly from the garden to cedar, olive branches, Douglas fir, or eucalyptus, the arrangement shifts with the seasons. Fresh cut flowers play their role - she loves tone on tone, so white roses, delicate pastel pink tulips, fragrant ginestra, and beautiful wax flowers, but she elevates her displays by incorporating fruits and vegetables. Autumn may bring artichokes, pomegranates, pumpkins, squash, grapes, apples, acorns, and figs. Winter transforms the table into a still-life painting of chestnuts, mushrooms, oranges dried and dusted with sugar, cranberries, or even whimsically shaped cookies.

And no table is complete without a glowing votive candle—Saula’s signature of warmth and welcome.

Thoughtfulness extends beyond the setting itself. A small party favor, always aligned with the theme, awaits each guest. Whether it’s a nutcracker, a hand-embroidered coaster, a crystal glass, or a charming ornament, every favor is chosen with intention and wrapped beautifully, often becoming the spark of new conversations.

In Saula’s hands, décor becomes storytelling. A passed-down recipe, a morning breakfast, a festive dinner—all receive the same devotion to presentation. She reminds us that the beauty of hosting lies not only in what we serve, but also in how we make people feel when they gather around our table.
