CKW LUXE is proud to announce that Tyler Hoang is our honoree for the Pop Star Award. This award recognizes the young people who shine in their talent. Whether they are amazing at art, music, or writing, we want to recognize them.

“Never give up.” – Tyler Hoang

Tyler Hoang is in sixth grade at St. Francis De Sales Catholic School, which he began attending in Pre-K 4. Tyler lives in Houston with his beloved parents, Tuan Hoang and Lilly Phuc Vuong, and his younger brother, Jacob Hoang.

While in kindergarten, Tyler’s teacher, Mrs. Jones, began helping him learn to read. Tyler developed a love of reading during that time that continues to this day. Since then, he has read a lot of books and can be found pouring over a book at his mother’s salon, at school, and at home before going to sleep. One of Tyler’s favorite series is the Harry Potter series, by J. K. Rowling. He has read every single book in the series, including the last one, which is pretty thick.

In fourth and fifth grades, Tyler qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke Tip) in language arts. The nonprofit organization supports academically talented students in grades four through twelve. It is Tyler’s ambition to go to Strake Jesuit College Preparatory for high school and to Rice University for college.

Tyler’s love of reading has motivated him to write his own book, which he has just finished. It’s a picture book for children ages four to seven called Humbleness. The touching tale tells the story of Tyler’s trip to Rome, Italy, with his family, when he was in fourth grade. In it, Tyler describes meeting three important adults: his great-uncle, Joseph Thang Nguyen, who is a priest; Pope Francis; and Monsignor Dung Cao, a friend of his great-uncle. While observing their actions, Tyler discovers they share a common quality, but he doesn’t know what the word for the quality is.

After Tyler and his family arrive home, and Tyler has puzzled over this, he asks his mother what the quality is. She gives him the correct word for it and explains what it means. It’s a lovely story and illustrates well the meaning of the word “humble.” Some of the proceeds from the sale of the book will go to the Red Cross, St. Francis De Sales Catholic School, and other charities. Tyler will keep the rest for college.

Tyler met Pope Francis three times while he was in Rome with his parents and little brother. The family ate lunch in the same room as the Pope, they kissed his ring, and they were blessed by him a number of times. As well, they received rosaries from the Pope that he had blessed. Tyler’s great-uncle Thang works for Pope Francis, which is why Tyler and his family were able to meet him, have lunch with him, and even have their pictures taken with him. Tyler is thankful for having been given that special opportunity by his great-uncle. That is why Tyler decided to write his book about him, the Pope, and Monsignor Dung Cao.

When Tyler isn’t involved with school and his studies or reading or writing, he likes to play soccer, basketball, and chess.

Tyler is planning on writing a chapter book next. It is his hope that children and their parents like Humbleness, and that they find it interesting as well as informative. He had a lot of fun writing it, and it is his wish that everyone has fun reading it.

CKW LUXE would like to congratulate Tyler Hoang on being the Pop Star Award honoree. As the embodiment of the award, Tyler shines through the stories he tells as a writer. We can’t wait to read his chapter book and the books he writes after that. We know they will all be wonderful.
